About Langham Walled Gardens

History of the Walled Gardens

The history of Langham Hall Walled Garden can be traced back to 1705 when the first section was walled off. However some Langham residents suggest the area known as ‘Castle ditches’ betrays an earlier past incorporating the garden into the earlier castle grounds. The inner wall was added in 1832 and may have provided a micro climate for tropical fruits such as pineapples. A Victorian greenhouse was also built and a furnace provided the energy to heat water pipes that passed through. In its heyday this provided a year round supply of fruit and vegetables for the Hall.

Throughout the years there have been many custodians and gardeners contributing to this beautiful and dynamic garden. 1n 1905 Langham boasted 15 gardeners, under-gardeners and boys who worked the grounds. Today there is one full time paid gardener, Steve, Catherine and a team of volunteers.
